Installation

GoAnime plays video through mpv. The Windows installer includes it; on other systems, install mpv first.

Once installed, just run goanime. To update: goanime --update.

Download and run the installer. It installs GoAnime and mpv and adds both to your PATH.

Q.01Windows says the file might be dangerous. Is it safe?

SmartScreen warns about programs without a digital signature, and the GoAnime installer doesn't have one yet. Every release is built by GitHub Actions from the public source code, and the download page links the SHA-256 checksums of every file so you can verify yours. To continue, click “More info” and then “Run anyway”.

Q.02Why do I need mpv?

GoAnime finds the episode and hands the video to mpv, a lightweight open-source player. The Windows installer already includes mpv; on macOS, install it with brew install mpv, and on Linux, with your distribution's package manager.

Q.03Where do downloaded episodes go?

To ~/.local/goanime/downloads/anime, with a folder for each anime and Plex-style names such as Anime - S01E01.mp4. The ~ is your user folder, on Windows too. Movies go to ~/.local/goanime/downloads/movies. To use another folder, pass -o followed by the path.

Q.04A source stopped working. What now?

By default GoAnime searches every source at once and falls back to another when one fails. Sites change often, and fixes ship in new releases: update with goanime --update (on Arch, yay -S goanime). If the problem persists, tell us on Discord or open an issue on GitHub.

Q.05Does it work on phones?

GoAnime runs on Linux, macOS and Windows. For Android, there is GoAnime Mobile, a separate app.

Q.06How do I uninstall it?

On Windows, uninstall GoAnime from Settings > Apps; the uninstaller also takes it off the PATH. On macOS and Linux, delete the binary with sudo rm /usr/local/bin/goanime (on Arch, yay -R goanime). Your downloads and history stay in ~/.local/goanime (Windows keeps the history in %LOCALAPPDATA%\GoAnime) and are not deleted; remove those folders if you want.
